Vitess is an open source sharding middleware system for MySQL that lets applications view a sharded MySQL cluster as a giant monolithic database.

It natively supports cloud and automates many functions of database administrators making it an ideal solution for transactional data in cloud. Vitess recently joined the CNCF.

Vitess was born at Youtube in 2010 and today serves production traffic at companies such as Square, Slack and JD.com.
